Kid Activities

Break the Ice Experiment

Activity Details

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Activity Time: 10–15 minutes
Age Range: 3+ years
Mess Level: Low

Instructions

Step 1Fill the bowl: Fill a clear bowl with water.
Step 2Add the “ice”: Sprinkle a thin layer of baby powder over the surface of the water.
Step 3Create the center: Add 1–2 drops of blue food coloring to the middle—this represents your “ice.”
Step 4Prep the Q-tip: Dip the tip of a cotton swab into dish soap.
Step 5Break the ice: Gently touch the soapy Q-tip to the center of the bowl and watch the “ice” instantly break apart.
Step 6What’s Happening? The dish soap breaks the surface tension of the water, causing the baby powder to quickly move away, just like cracking ice. It’s a fun and visual way to introduce kids to how water molecules react. Affiliate link to incorporate in post https://geni.us/SQ4XI
