Kid Activities

Candle in a Jar Science Experiment

Activity Details

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Activity Time: 10 minutes
Age Range: 6+ years (with adult supervision)
Mess Level: Low

Instructions

Step 1Prepare the base: Pour water into a shallow glass dish and add a few drops of food coloring.
Step 2Add the candle: Place the tea candle in the dish and carefully light it.
Step 3Prep the jar: Lightly spray the inside of the mason jar with perfume (or rubbing alcohol).
Step 4Cover the candle: Place the jar upside down over the candle.
Step 5Observe: Watch as the flame goes out and the colored water rises up into the jar.
Step 6What’s Happening? The flame uses up the oxygen inside the jar. As the air cools and pressure changes, it pulls the water up into the jar—showing how air pressure works in a visual way
