Kid Activities

Grow a Rainbow Science Experiment

Activity Details

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Activity Time: 10–20 minutes
Age Range: 3+ years
Mess Level: Low

Instructions

Step 1Prep the paper towel: Cut a paper towel strip a few inches wide. Fold it in half lengthwise if needed.
Step 2Draw your rainbow: Use markers to draw thick lines of color on each end of the paper towel (leave the middle blank).
Step 3Fill cups: Fill two cups with water.
Step 4Set it up: Place each end of the paper towel into a cup so the middle arches between them.
Step 5Watch the magic: As the water travels up the paper towel, the colors will begin to move and meet in the middle—creating a growing rainbow.
Step 6What’s Happening? Water moves through the paper towel using capillary action, carrying the marker colors with it. When the colors meet, they blend to form new shades.
